On Friday 23rd January 1970, a new business John F Whippy & Company was founded in Eastbourne which aimed to help and assist anyone seeking insurance for their first car, their property, or business. Now 50 years later and the business is still still growing and building as a Company. Here at John Whippy Insurance Brokers we would like to thank everyone who has ever placed their insurances with us over the last fifty years. Without our customers it would not have been possible for our Company to reach this milestone!

The Beginning

Our Founder John Whippy started off working as a gardener after leaving the RAF back in the late fifties and after a while he left his gardening work to take up a career in Insurance. He went to work for an insurer as their representative based in their local Eastbourne office. By 1969 John Whippy decided to form his own Insurance Brokerage and thus John Whippy Insurance Brokers was born! Initially trading from a room behind John Whippy’s garage in Pevensey Bay. Over the years John’s wife Wendy, his brother Syd and other members of the Family have all worked in the business. For the past forty two years the brokerage has been operating at our current location in Cavendish Place.

When Gavin Whippy joined the company

After a very successful first 15 years, John Whippy’s son Gavin Whippy started to work under his Father and his influence on the business was felt straight away. Gavin took the business from an old manual back office system to using the most modern and up to date computer software available at that time. A significant investment was required. This meant the potential for John Whippy Insurance Brokers to grow was at an all-time high. It helped the brokerage to provide a quicker, more efficient service with the ability to offer more competitive quotations.

When Gavin & Joanna Whippy became the owners

In 1999, John Whippy retired and his son Gavin and his wife Joanna took over as the Directors of the business and they continue to be the owners to this day. Since taking over, Gavin and Joanna have continued the growth of this business by expanding the amount of insurance products we can offer and upgrading the systems we have in place to the most advanced and contemporary software available. Despite facing greater competition from new insurance markets and the online competition, John Whippy Insurance Brokers has been able to adapt and grow. The brokerage remains truly independent, not part of any network and continues to grow as a company!

The Present Day

Over the last ten years the third generation of the Family have started working for the business, Thomas Whippy, Christopher Whippy and Robert Whippy who are the three sons of Gavin and Joanna. Every year their influence on the company builds and similar to when Gavin showed his influence on the business when he first joined in the brokerage back in the eighties. After 50 years of success, John Whippy Insurance Brokers aims to continue providing first class service and offering competitive quotations to all our customers. We hope to continue investing in advanced systems and programs to allow us to offer the most appropriate insurance we can with the best possible level of personal service.
